From Garden to Gratitude| Why Real Food Matters in Real Schools

What happens when a student pulls a carrot from the ground for the first time?

Surprise.
Joy.  Connection. And something deeper — an embodied sense of care for the world that sustains them.

At Farm My School, food isn’t just something we grow. It’s something we teach — as culture, as wellbeing, and as a bridge between learning and life.

Real Food, Real Learning

We believe every child deserves access to fresh, nutritious food — and the knowledge of where it comes from.

Here’s what we’ve seen when food becomes central to education:

  • Increased Engagement: Students who struggle in the classroom thrive in the garden.

  • Improved Nutrition Awareness: Harvesting kale makes them more likely to eat it.

  • Gratitude in Action: Cooking a meal with peers fosters care and reciprocity.

  • Better at Problem Solving: Encouraging teamwork to come up with an answer, and improved concentration from being out in nature.
  • Improved Wellbeing and Health: Learning about how to grow vegetables, and sharing that knowledge at home means eating better and feeling better.
  • Enhanced Social Skills: Students in the garden will laugh and talk and communicate with each other about what they see.

From planting seeds to preparing meals, students experience the full food cycle — and with it, a sense of agency and appreciation.

It’s More Than Veggies

Our garden is a microcosm of something bigger:

🌀 Systems thinking  🤝 Community collaboration
🍲 Food justice and equity 🌱Climate action from the ground up

Every veggie box, every compost lesson, every shared meal is a step toward a more connected, healthier food system — starting right in the schoolyard.

What’s Growing?

  • Garden-to-kitchen programs with students leading the way

  • Weekly veggie boxes supporting local families and feeding gratitude

  • Seed-saving and composting workshops that reinforce the full cycle of food

  • Parent and community volunteering driving intergenerational change
