Nourish Workshop: Growing & Cooking on Country with Nornie Bero

Nourish Workshop: Growing & Cooking on Country with Nornie Bero

There are workshops.
Then there are experiences that never leave you.

Chef, author, proud Meriam woman from the Torres Strait and Farm My School Ambassador, Nornie Bero, returned to host another memorable Nourish workshop, Growing and Cooking on Country, with our very own CEO and Co-founder, James McLennan.

More than a cooking class.

The day invited participants to slow down, connect with Country and explore the relationship between food, culture and community.

The session commenced with a reflective Acknowledgement of Country, and silent and moving walk to the Basin. Guests discovered native plants and how to propagate them, then moved onto a farm tour to learn about regenerative farming practices, thriving ecosystems and harvested seasonal produce.

From there Nornie, welcomed everyone into the kitchen and it was game on. Kangaroo burgers with a wattle seed, beetroot, kohlrabi and rhubarb piccalilli was on the menu and the aromas really packed a punch.

"Less is more when it comes to native ingredients," says Nornie. "They've got a real hit!"

Nornie was generous with her time and wisdom of Indigenous flavours and spices.

Everyone learned how native ingredients, traditional cooking methods and seasonal produce can come together to create dishes that are rich in both flavour and meaning.

Conversations flowed.
People connected.

The workshop became a space for learning, sharing and celebrating the power of food to bring people together.

Together a delicious meal was prepared using Farm My School's nutrient dense produce, discovering new flavours while gaining practical skills and a deeper appreciation for Indigenous food knowledge.

The workshop reflected Farm My School's commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the farm.

By bringing together growers, chefs, educators and community members, we continue to explore how food can inspire curiosity, strengthen connections and foster a healthier future for people and the planet.
