What is the Farm My School Elective?

The Farm My School Elective is a hands-on, Year 10 agriculture and horticulture program offer at Bellarine and Colac.

Students work alongside experienced regenerative farmers to learn practical agriculture and horticulture skills – covering permaculture, soil health, seasonal planting, harvesting, crop planning and sustainable food systems as part of their school curriculum.

What do Students Learn?

Regenerative farming principles – soil health, composting, sustainable land management, how to increase biodiversity

Permaculture design – how food systems can work with, rather than against, natural cycles

Seasonal growing – planting, tending and harvesting real crops across a school term

Food systems literacy – where food comes from and how communities can build resilient, local food supply

Practical life and career skills – teamwork, problem-solving, and early exposure to agriculture as a career pathway

Why Choose the Farm My School Elective?

Hands-on, not theoretical – students work a real, functioning farm, not a classroom simulation

Learn from working farmers – direct mentorship from people actively practising regenerative agriculture

Builds real-world skills – resilience, food systems understanding, and practical land management

Connects students to community – part of a broader model already feeding local families and partnering with like-minded organisations

Genuine pathway – for students considering agriculture, horticulture or environmental careers, this is real early exposure. Be in nature to learn and stay healthy.

Farm My School has made quite a positive impact. It's given kids an opportunity to come out and learn more about nature and involve it in all kinds of classes, such as ceramics and media."

Piper, Bellarine Secondary College Student

I've learnt a lot about the farm, and the way things work and the community around it. But I've also learnt a lot about myself, about being outside, being on the land – it's a good place to reflect on everything."
