MEET ALEX
Alex Barrios is a Trainee Farmer at Farm My School Bellarine, who recently completed his traineeship with the Farmer Incubator Program, and he is heading overseas to further his experience.
With the support of Geelong Community Foundation he has secured a three-month internship at the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology in Spain, where he will utilise what he has learnt and grow his knowledge in healthy food systems.
HOW HAS THIS BEEN POSSIBLE, ALEX?
This opportunity has all been possible thanks to my time here at Farm My School. I would highly recommend this program to other young ambitious students interested in gaining hands-on experience on a farm.
WHAT WORK WILL YOU BE DOING AT THE INSTITUTE?
I will be assisting them with lab research, farm operations and field samples.
WHAT IS YOUR FOCUS FOR THE FUTURE?
I am hoping to get some further experience before I go to university and study horticulture science. I’d like to get involved with policy surrounding global food systems and agricultural sciences. I want to leave an impact on my community and an impression on the people that know me.

This is an exciting chapter in Alex’s journey and a clear example of what is possible after a traineeship at Farm My School. He was also able to complete his Year 12, alongside securing a Certificate III in Horticulture.
The Incubator Program is a unique offering and one that provides:
🍃 Hands-on experience in horticulture and regenerative farming
🍃 Real pathways to employment and further education
🍃 Industry connections and opportunities
🍃 Learning on-site and knowledge of a healthy food system
🍃 Mentorship and guidance from experienced farmers and educators
